چکیده

BACKGROUND Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8)-positive plasmablastic lymphoma is a disease which correlates with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Little is known about the pathogenesis of the disease due to its rarity. We report an autopsy case about AIDS related HHV-8-positive plasmablastic lymphoma and presents an examination about HHV8 related proteins for the disease by using immunohistochemical techniques. CASE PRESENTATION Two kinds of tumors complicated the male AIDS patient: one was HHV-8-positive plasmablastic lymphoma and the other was Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Immunohistochemically, the lymphoma cells were positive for HHV8-associated lytic early proteins as well as HHV8 latency-associated nuclear antigen 1 (LANA-1), and, on the other hand, the lymphoma cells were negative for lytic immediately early proteins. KS was positive for only LANA-1. CONCLUSION These findings indicate that the lymphoma cells acquired an ability to proliferate without de novo HHV8 replication. Moreover, the onset mechanisms of HHV-8-positive plasmablastic lymphoma may be different from those of KS.

Human Herpesvirus-8 Infection Associated with Kaposi Sarcoma, Multicentric Castleman's Disease, and Plasmablastic Microlymphoma in a Man with AIDS: A Case Report with Review of Pathophysiologic Processes

Kaposi sarcoma (KS), multicentric Castleman's disease (MCD), and plasmablastic microlymphoma, are all linked to human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) infection and HIV-induced immunodeficiency. Herein, we describe the case of a Kenyan man diagnosed with HIV in 2000. He deferred highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and remained in good health until his CD4+ count declined in 2006. He was hospitali...

An Aggressive Plasmablastic Lymphoma of the Oral Cavity as Primary Manifestation of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome: Case Report and Literature Review

Introduction Plasmablastic lymphoma is a rare entity that was first described in the jaws and the oral cavity of patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Plasmablastic lymphoma is considered as a diffuse, large, B-cell lymphoma with a unique phenotype and a predilection for the oral cavity. Objective The authors describe a case of an aggres...

Plasmablastic Lymphoma Mimicking Acute Pancreatitis

Background. Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare B-cell neoplasm. It predominantly occurs in the oral cavity of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients and exhibits a highly aggressive clinical behavior. Case Presentation. We describe an unusual case of a 37-year-old HIV-positive male who presented with acute pancreatitis secondary to multiple peripancreatic masses compressing th...

HHV-8 is associated with a plasmablastic variant of Castleman disease that is linked to HHV-8-positive plasmablastic lymphoma.

Castleman disease (CD) is a lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown etiology that is associated with the development of secondary tumors, including B-cell lymphoma. Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) (Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus) sequences have been described in some cases of multicentric Castleman disease (MCD). Using a monoclonal antibody against an HHV-8-latent nuclear antigen, we show ...

KSHV- and EBV-associated germinotropic lymphoproliferative disorder.

Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is known to be associated with 3 distinct lymphoproliferative disorders: primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), multicentric Castleman disease (MCD), and MCD-associated plasmablastic lymphoma. We report 3 cases of a previously undescribed KSHV-associated lymphoproliferative disorder. The disease presented as localized lymphadenopathy and showed a favorable...
